Volunteering Participation Changes among Older Adults and Their Gender Differences
Lee Hyun-Kee

Abstract
This paper tries to understand the trajectories of volunteering among Korean older adults, their gender differences over the lifespan and the influential factors. Using 2008-2016 KLoSA data over 8 years, the study analyzed total 9,855 persons and 39,533 person-years observations with the multi-level growth curve analysis model. The findings reveal that the first, the individual trajectories of volunteering decreased in gradual inverted U-shape(¡û) curve and were stabilized around the age of 66. The second, their gender differences of volunteering persisted in the ways of dynamic process over the lifespan, which were caused by the negative directions(-) of covariance of the intercepts and the change slopes. The third, the individual trajectories came to be different each other, which were impacted by the factors of individual uniqueness as well as change of marital status, weakened health, decreasing interaction frequency, reduced social networks. Results suggest that factors such as health management, social network extension, interaction improvement help to reduce the cessation, and bolstering mens¡¯ intensity of volunteering in early stage needs to keep them longer for amelioration of their gender differences. Finally the paper suggests the life cycle and individualized management strategy approaches to volunteering for health welfare policies and proposes the gender-comparison analysis study in the near future.
